United States Local Spotlight Overseas Transfers Corporate Travel
The New York City skyline across the Hudson River at golden hour

The United States sits inside Drivision's overseas partner network as one of our most requested — and most misunderstood — destinations, because "the US" is really a dozen different trips wearing one passport stamp.

Australian travellers tend to talk about "going to America" the way they'd talk about going to New Zealand — as a single, compact trip. It rarely is. The distance from New York to Los Angeles is greater than the distance from Sydney to Perth, and the two cities sit in different time zones, different climates and, culturally, close to different countries. A client flying into JFK for three days of meetings and a client flying into LAX for a week of conferences and site visits are planning two entirely different trips, even if the itinerary on paper says the same country.

This guide covers the United States the way we'd brief a client before their first American trip — the scale problem that catches most first-time visitors out, the handful of cities where Australian corporate and VIP travel actually concentrates, the practical differences worth knowing before you land, and the calendar events worth planning transport around well in advance.

A Country the Size of a Continent

The first thing worth settling before any US itinerary is drawn up is just how large the country actually is. The contiguous United States spans four time zones, and a nonstop flight between New York and Los Angeles takes around six hours in the air — comparable to flying from Sydney to Perth, except the two ends of that trip feel, look and operate almost nothing alike. Treating "the US leg" of a longer trip as a single block of time without accounting for that internal distance is one of the most common planning mistakes we see, particularly on itineraries built around a single multi-city conference schedule.

It matters for transport planning specifically because it changes what "local knowledge" means. A driver who knows Manhattan's avenues and bridge traffic patterns has a completely different skill set to a driver who knows the sprawl of the Los Angeles freeway network or the convention-centre loading docks of Las Vegas. Our overseas partner network is built city by city for exactly this reason, rather than assuming one partner can cover the whole country adequately.

The Coasts Australians Travel Most

For business and VIP travel out of Australia, demand concentrates heavily on a handful of cities rather than spreading evenly across the country. New York remains the single most requested US destination for our corporate clients — a genuine global finance, media and diplomatic hub where a flight-tracked arrival into JFK, Newark or LaGuardia and a driver who already knows which bridge or tunnel is backed up that morning is worth considerably more than a generic airport pickup. Manhattan's grid is famously logical on paper and famously difficult in practice, between yellow cab traffic, constant roadworks and the sheer volume of vehicles competing for the same lanes at peak hour.

Los Angeles and the wider Southern California region is the other major pole, drawing a different mix of Australian visitors — entertainment industry meetings, technology sector travel, and a growing number of corporate delegations visiting the US West Coast's technology corridor. LA's challenge is almost the opposite of New York's: distances that look short on a map routinely take forty minutes or more by freeway, and a driver who understands which route actually moves at a given hour, rather than which route a map app suggests by distance alone, makes a measurable difference to a packed meeting schedule.

Washington DC and the VIP and Delegation Angle

Washington DC occupies a particular niche for Australian travel that's close to home for us given our own history with government and delegation work in Canberra. Official visits, diplomatic functions, think-tank conferences and bilateral business delegations all bring Australian visitors to DC on a schedule that looks a great deal like the sitting-week, embassy-function rhythm we cut our teeth on. The city's security perimeters, motorcade protocols around federal buildings and the sheer density of official vehicle movement around Capitol Hill and the National Mall mean a driver briefed on protocol, not just on directions, is genuinely necessary rather than a nice-to-have for this kind of travel.

This is also where our VIP and delegation transport experience translates most directly — the same protocol-briefed, discreet standard of service we provide for diplomatic-level transport domestically extends through our overseas partner network to Washington, coordinated through the same single point of contact a client already has on a Drivision booking.

US Landmarks and Precincts Worth Building a Day Around

  • Manhattan: Midtown, Wall Street, the United Nations precinct
  • Washington DC: Capitol Hill, the National Mall, Georgetown
  • Los Angeles: Downtown LA, Century City, the Westside tech corridor
  • San Francisco: the Financial District and Silicon Valley corridor
  • Las Vegas: the Strip and the convention district
  • Chicago: the Loop and Michigan Avenue's business precinct

Las Vegas: Conventions, Conferences and the 24-Hour City

Las Vegas earns its own section for a reason that has very little to do with its reputation. The city hosts one of the densest conference and trade-show calendars of any destination in the world — CES in early January remains the single largest draw, but the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Strip's major hotel-casino properties run back-to-back trade events across nearly the entire calendar year, pulling in a steady stream of Australian corporate travellers whose entire trip is built around a single event rather than general tourism.

What that means practically is that Las Vegas transport planning runs on a different rhythm to most cities — rideshare surge pricing during a major convention's opening and closing hours can be dramatic, loading-dock and valet queues at the convention centre and major hotel properties can run long during peak event windows, and a driver who tracks which property's queue is moving and which isn't on a given morning is worth noticeably more during a major show week than during a quiet one.

Practical Differences Worth Knowing Before You Land

A handful of practical differences trip up Australian visitors more often than any single city's traffic does. Driving is on the right-hand side of the road in the US, the reverse of Australia, which is one of the more common reasons overseas visitors prefer a chauffeur to a self-drive rental for a short business trip rather than adjusting to unfamiliar road rules on a tight schedule. Tipping culture is considerably more embedded in US service industries than in Australia — 15 to 20 percent is a standard expectation in restaurants and for many personal services, and it's worth budgeting for rather than being caught off guard by on a longer trip.

US mobile data and payment infrastructure are both generally straightforward for Australian visitors — contactless card payment is close to universal in major cities, and most Australian telcos offer reasonably priced US roaming packages — but it's worth checking with your provider before departure regardless, particularly if the itinerary spans several states. Electrical outlets run on 120V with a different plug shape to Australia's, so a travel adapter is worth packing rather than sourcing on arrival.

Choosing When to Visit

The US calendar has a few fixed points worth planning around regardless of which city is on the itinerary. Thanksgiving week in late November is the single busiest domestic US travel period of the year, with airport congestion and inflated short-notice transport pricing to match — worth avoiding for a tight business trip unless there's no other option. The period between Christmas and New Year sees a similar, if slightly smaller, surge as domestic travellers move for the holidays.

Beyond the holiday crush, each major city carries its own calendar worth checking before booking: CES in Las Vegas each January, a dense spring and autumn conference season across most major business cities, and significant sporting calendar events — the Super Bowl in February, held in a different host city each year, and the US Open tennis in New York each August and September — that bring both genuine business opportunity and serious short-term transport and accommodation pressure to whichever city is hosting.

Why Chauffeured Transport Suits US Travel

The case for pre-arranged chauffeured transport in the US rests on three things that compound rather than stand alone: the sheer scale of the country making local knowledge genuinely valuable rather than a convenience, a conference and event calendar dense enough that transport demand spikes sharply and unpredictably in specific cities at specific times, and a driving culture — right-hand traffic, tipping norms, surge pricing — different enough from home that most Australian visitors would rather hand the problem to someone who already knows it than learn it on a tight schedule.

Long-haul arrivals compound the case further. A fourteen- or fifteen-hour flight from Australia's east coast lands tired travellers at exactly the hour a flight-tracked pickup matters most, whatever city they've landed in — and a driver who's already watching the flight, rather than waiting at a kerb hoping the arrival board is accurate, is the difference between a smooth start to a trip and a frustrating one.

Getting Started

Whether it's a single airport transfer into JFK or LAX, a multi-city business trip spanning the East and West Coasts, or VIP transport coordinated for an official visit to Washington DC, arranging it before you fly means one less thing to solve after a long-haul arrival. Send us your itinerary and flight details and we'll have the same fixed-fare, flight-tracked standard waiting on the ground, city by city.

If your US trip spans several cities or time zones, mention the full itinerary when you book rather than arranging each leg separately — our overseas partner network can generally coordinate the whole trip as one arrangement, which tends to work out smoother than a series of individually booked transfers.

"The United States rewards travellers who treat it as several different trips rather than one — which is exactly why we plan it city by city, not border to border."
